In 2018, Dana Bloom founded Big Chill Heating and Air.
Customers frequently ask how I ended up in HVAC. Here is the story:
Before Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning
Prior to my Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning career, I worked as a public school science teacher and a mineland reclamation specialist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
Between careers, I was substitute teaching. The lesson plan for the day included a recruiter from Hennepin Technical College (HTC). At the time, I was wondering how I would pay for my sons’ college tuition. The recruiter spoke about Post Secondary Education Options (PSEO). PSEO is an under-utilized program, specific to Minnesota, where high school students are able to take college courses, and the credit counts for both high school and college. Tuition is paid by the state.
Within a week of learning about PSEO, I scheduled a technical college visit for my son. When we toured the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) program, I realized I wanted to attend. In the end, my son and I both attended HTC’s 2-year HVAC program.
Hennepin Technical College
Our classmates quickly figured out we were mother and son. The running joke became: “Mom is living the dream. Son is living the nightmare”. The HVAC program at HTC is one of the most respected HVAC programs in the state. I made great friends, and enjoyed quality time with my son. I was genuinely living the dream. Mercifully, my son was not permanently damaged from the embarrassment of having his mom in class!
In the second year of our program, both my son and I were selected to compete in the Skill USA program. It is a high honor to be selected to represent your school in the competition. My son outperformed me.
Professional HVAC Experience
Additional experience includes doing commercial HVAC work in a research and development facility, followed by residential service for a large Minnesota appliance service company. At both of these positions, I was fortunate to participate in continuing and rigorous training.

State Bond / Licensing
Big Chill Heating and Air LLC holds the required mechanical contractor bond through the State of Minnesota.
In Minnesota, there is no state license for HVAC/mechanical contractors. Each city has individual requirements (not all cities require, or even offer, a city license). If your city is listed in my service area, please be assured I am in compliance with your city, state and federal requirements. I will happily provide additional city-specific licensing information upon request.
